It's hard finding gifts that have that WOW impact
When I make a soap like "Cuero Crudo" (means Raw Hide) it gets a lot of compliments along with 'but its too pretty to use'. In other words, there is no value in buying a soap that I won't use.
Even though the fragrance, "Sands of Morocco", which is a classic carnation fragrance blended with warm, powdery sandalwood and musk, is a wonderful unisex fragrance and its made with skin loving ingredients such as olive oil, coconut oil, castor oil, avocado oil, Australian red reef clay, rhassoul clay and argan oil. Like this is really good for your skin.
What if you gave it to someone as a gift?
They too would probably not buy it for themselves for the very same reason as you. But wouldn't it make them feel special to receive one as a gift? Wouldn't it put a smile of delight on their face?
Let me tell you a story from my distant past, back when I was 20 and broke.
I started dating a guy who drove an Aston Martin. I didn't even know what one was until I met him. A couple of months after we started dating it was his birthday. What was l'il old church mouse poor me going to get him as a gift? My budget was max $40 and we're talking back when that was probably about $100 now (aka the dark ages, before the internet).
I decided to look for a really expensive small thing.
In the end I spent $30 on a hand carved wooden tooth brush. That was a really expensive toothbrush back then. The point being, it was a luxury item but it was within my budget. I was able to give this very lucky man, who had everything, something that he didn't already have and that fit with his rich dude lifestyle.
And that's where I'm going with this. We all have family and friends who have everything, either because they are wealthy or because they are older and have accumulated everything they need/want.
When it comes to gift time, especially Christmas, its usually a real imagination challenge, not to mention time consuming, to find something that will wow them. We usually end up resorting to buying them a nice bottle of something to drink or a gourmet food basket.
Why not a luxury soap as a one of a kind, original gift?
It is kind of heartbreaking to me cause these 'artsy' soaps I make also have wonderful skin loving ingredients, but hey, eventually the soap has to be used, right?
Then there are soaps that have a bit of tongue in cheek humor. Most people have a niece or nephew or brother who partakes of that funny weed stuff and they get the munchies afterwards, or so I've read.
I called this soap cake 'The Munchies'. It has the scent of Gingersnap Cookies with a bit of Cannabis fragrance in the 'leaf'. Do you think that your smoking person would like to receive this? Do you think they might burst out laughing when they unwrapped their gift? and do you think they might think you were awesome?
Unless of course they are closet smokers and then it might be like a 'coming out' event!! And maybe they didn't want their Mom or spouse to know, in which case, you're in trouble but they will never forget this gift, it will go down in the history of your family to be retold every Christmas. "Remember the time you gave Bob that soap cake with the leaf on top?" Followed by guffaws of laughter.
And look at the beneficial ingredients in this little gag gift: olive oil, coconut oil, sunflower oil, castor oil, cocoa butter, apricot kernel oil, avocado oil, jojoba oil, shea butter and good old sea salt.
After they've photographed it and shared it on Facebook or Instagram (or both) they will hopefully eventually use the soap (just cut it into smaller manageable pieces) and that's when the ingredients design will truly be appreciated and my life's mission will be complete.
