Living in New Mexico brings a whole new set of challenges to keeping skin happy and healthy—the dry desert air, altitude, and powerful sunshine mean that your skin care routine here must be tailored to cope with these extreme environmental conditions.

Why New Mexico’s Climate Demands Special Skincare Attention
Walk outside in New Mexico and you’ll instantly feel that blast of sun and dryness.
The desert climate here means less moisture in the air, plus stronger UV rays thanks to our elevation. And lets not forget about the winds, the very drying winds.
What does that do to your skin?
Dry, flaky patches that don’t go away
Extra sensitivity and irritation
Signs of aging before you expect them
Sneaky sunburns (even on cloudy days!)
I remember my first summer here in 2018 — my usual routine just wasn’t enough (I came from Houston, TX). That’s when I started formulating skin care products with the desert in mind.
What works best?
Hydration really is everything.
But not all moisturizers are created equal for this climate.
Look for ingredients like hyaluronic acid, glycerin, or natural oils (like jojoba, camellia seed or argan) to lock in moisture without feeling greasy.
Don’t skip sunscreen - even if it doesn’t seem all that sunny.
What makes the best skin care brand?
Everyone asks what the “best” brand is, but it truly depends on your skin, your goals, and how you like to live. Here’s what I believe you should look for:
Clear, honest ingredient lists on the labels
Safe, gentle formulas
Products that actually deliver results
Ethical values—cruelty-free, eco-friendly practices
At least that is what we offer.
A focus on natural, handmade products designed to nurture both skin and home.
My Personal Skincare Routine for New Mexico’s Climate
Here’s what’s working for me:
Gentle, sulfate-free cleanser
Hydrating toner
Serum with hyaluronic acid for deep hydration
Nourishing cream with natural oils
Sun protection cream if going outside
At night, I switch to a richer moisturizer. I also do a gentle exfoliation at least once a month, so my skin can soak up all the good stuff.
PRO TIP: Especially if you’ve just moved here and your skin is struggling: Drink lots of water and consider a humidifier for your bedroom.
For desert skincare, the ideal humidifier setting is between 40% and 60% relative humidity.
This range helps prevent dry, flaky skin by maintaining your skin’s moisture barrier and reducing water loss caused by extremely arid air.
Setting the humidifier below 40% is generally not sufficient for hydrating skin, while settings above 60% can encourage mold growth and discomfort, especially in warm climates.
For best results, run the humidifier in your bedroom at night, as skin loses more water during sleep in dry conditions.
Consider placing a hygrometer in your room to monitor humidity and adjust settings as needed to stay in the 40–60% range.
- it helps your skin and your sleep!
