"Peonies, to me, are the roses of spring."

Updated: Apr 30

We'd like to introduce you to the romantic Peony, our Fragrance of the Month.

"Peonies, to me, are the roses of spring." - Lady Mary Wortley Montagu

When I found this quote, I wondered, who the heck is Lady Mary Wortley Montagu? Turns out she was quite influential in the 1700's. You can read more about her HERE

The reason we chose Peony is literally because it is a delightful Springtime flower.

With their lush petals, intoxicating fragrance and timeless elegance, peonies have long been revered as symbols of beauty and romance.

We did a bit of research and it's all rather interesting.

Origins and History

Originating from Asia, particularly China and Japan, peonies have a rich history dating back thousands of years. Revered in ancient Chinese culture as the "King of Flowers," peonies were prized for their beauty and medicinal properties.

Through trade with the East, they made their way to Europe and North America, where they continue to enchant gardeners and flower enthusiasts with their breathtaking blooms.

How to Care for Peonies

Peonies are surprisingly easy to care for, making them a favorite among gardeners of all skill levels. They grow well in USDA Hardiness Zones 3 to 7 but can also grow in Zone 8.

Here are some essential care tips to ensure your peonies thrive:

  • Planting: Choose a location with well-drained soil and full sun exposure. Plant peonies in the fall, burying the roots shallowly, no more than 2 inches deep.

  • Watering: Provide regular watering, especially during dry spells, but avoid overwatering to prevent root rot.

  • Support: Peonies often require support to prevent their heavy blooms from bending or breaking. Use stakes or cages to prop up the plants as needed.

  • Pruning: Prune peonies back to the ground in late fall or early winter to promote healthy growth in the following season.

Fragrance and Sensory Delights

One of the most enchanting qualities of peonies is their intoxicating fragrance.

Described as sweet, floral, and slightly citrusy, the scent of peonies is both uplifting and soothing.

When it comes to floral fragrances this is one of our all time favorites, especially when it comes to the awakening of all your senses with the arrival of Spring. Precisely why we chose it as our Fragrance of the Month for April.

This myth highlights the transformative power of the peony flower and its connection to healing in Greek mythology.

It is the root of the peony flower that seems to be the source of all these healing properties, but as there are not enough medical studies to quote, we are not going there. It's just so interesting that such a beautiful flowering plant can also be so beneficial.

Symbolism and Significance

Throughout history, peonies have symbolized various virtues and sentiments. In Chinese culture, they represent wealth, honor, and nobility, while in Western cultures, they are often associated with romance, beauty, and prosperity. Whether given as a gift or enjoyed in the garden, peonies convey a message of love, admiration, and appreciation.
