In Search of Giraffes
We found them! Where? Bandia Reserve is a 15 hectare (3,700 acre) wildlife reserve about 65kms (40 miles) drive from Dakar, Senegal. You can shoot down the new A1 freeway or go the back way which is way more interesting. Through market gardens Busy villages (Video of this is on my Instagram ) Off the black top road and into the Reserve. We didn’t pre book, just rocked up and entry cost just under 30,000 CFA (US$60) for us to take our car (with up to 3 people in the car) as op

In a Lighthouse on a Breast
Waving to y’all from across the Atlantic Ocean and singing Happy Birthday to me! I’m at Les Mamelles (the breasts, in French) Lighthouse. This is an aerial shot Courtesy of AFK Travel If you click on that link there are more amazing aerial photos. Not photos I can take myself. There are two hills right on the coast close to each other, hence being named Les Mamelles, The Breasts. Although when I was online looking one page translated it as: The Renaissance Monument is on one

Christmas Craziness in Dakar
I had to go downtown Dakar in search of a drip filter coffee machine this afternoon. No Amazon Prime here. It was the same craziness that is happening all over America right now. Traffic is bumper to bumper, lines are ridiculously long. Who would have thought it in a country where 95% of the population is Muslim. But here they are Sufi Muslims and they embrace all of our holidays and join in enthusiastically. Sitting in over an hour of traffic to get to the one store I was to

Another magic pink lake
After hearing about Lake Retba (Lac Rose as the locals call it) here in Senegal, I did some research. There are 8 pink lakes (that are known about) in the world. Read about them all HERE Last Sunday I took off to see the pink water in person. Lac Rose is quite close to the Atlantic Ocean. A fact that became quite personal as you will hear further on. If you looked them up, pink lakes are typically high in salt content. The salt in this lake is collected by hand. See the guy i

AND NOW I’M IN WEST AFRICA
There I was pottering around making soap at home in Houston and BAM I am now in Dakar, Senegal, the westernmost point of Africa. NEW AIRPORT IN DAKAR I landed at the new airport, which just opened on December 7th. It was named after Blaise Diagne, the first African deputy elected to the French National Assembly (served 1914 to 1934). It was 1960 that Senegal gained its independence from France. It was the easiest and fastest time being processed to enter into a country, excep

How do you prefer your packages to be wrapped? Part 2
Well the results of the survey are in and here they are: Keep in mind that this was a very simple survey (on our Facebook page), designed to only take a minute of your time, so it is lacking in demographic information and other qualifiers, just a fun quickie and an interesting result. Qu. 1: Is fancy packaging on the products you buy important to you? Qu. 2: Is environmentally friendly packaging important to you? Qu. 3: Two identical products are packaged differently, one is

Leaving, On a Jet Plane ...
What do you do when you get a phone call offering you a job overseas for a while? You grab it with both hands! That's what happened for me on Thursday, I fly out on Tuesday. Stay tuned as I will be changing my site, temporarily, to a travel blog, maybe even vlog (if I can figure out how to do that). Destination will be revealed when I get there, probably next weekend as I will be hitting the ground running and starting work straight away. Which means that I have to close my s
